We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Person in Charge (APIC) to join the team at Sonas Nursing Home Moy Ridge, Ballina, Co. Mayo. This is a unique chance to play a key leadership role in our Nursing Home and shaping a culture of excellence.
Working closely with the Person in Charge (PIC), you will support the overall management of the centre, ensuring the highest standards of care, compliance, and staff support are achieved. You will be instrumental in creating a warm, welcoming, and person-centred environment where residents feel valued and staff feel supported to thrive.
Key Responsibilities
Act as Person in Charge in the absence of the PIC, ensuring full compliance with HIQA standards and regulatory requirements.
Support the PIC in the day-to-day running of the home, including staffing, clinical governance, and operational management.
Champion a culture of person-centred care, ensuring each resident’s dignity, choice, and independence are respected at all times.
Support and oversee safeguarding practices, ensuring a safe and secure environment for all residents.
Lead, motivate, and support the nursing and care teams, promoting a positive and collaborative workplace culture.
Act as a mentor and clinical role model, supporting staff development, training, and continuous improvement.
Contribute to building a strong, values-led team as part of the home’s ongoing development.
Participate in the on-call rota and work flexibly to meet the needs of the service.

What You’ll Do:
Support and assist the Person in Charge (PIC) in managing the nursing home’s organisation, operations, and staff.
Ensure high standards of person-centred care in a professional, respectful, and supportive environment.
Act as the lead in the absence of the PIC, fulfilling responsibilities outlined in the Health Act 2007 and HIQA National Quality Standards.
Provide clinical supervision, leadership, and mentorship to nursing and care teams.
Maintain compliance with statutory regulations, best practices, and Sonas policies.
Oversee safeguarding procedures, ensuring all concerns are reported and managed appropriately.
Organise staffing levels, ensuring efficient workforce management and high standards of care.
Support staff development, creating a positive learning environment and promoting continuous improvement.
Act as a resource for nursing staff, staying informed about the latest developments in nursing care.
Ensure adherence to health and safety policies, promoting a safe work environment.
Be available for day, night, and weekend shifts as required.
What We’re Looking For:
Registered Nurse with An Bord Altranais (active PIN required).
Third-Level Degree in Nursing.
Minimum of 6 years’ post-registration nursing experience.
At least 2 years’ experience in a nursing home environment.
At least 2 years’ experience in a management role.
Post-registration qualification in healthcare management is essential (or willingness to complete).
Post-registration qualification in Gerontology or Dementia Care is desirable.
Current and valid certifications in Infection Control, Manual and Resident Moving & Handling, Medication Management, Dementia, CPR, and Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults (training can be provided if required).
Strong leadership, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to motivate and support an effective team.
Commitment to delivering outstanding care to older people.
